The salary scheme of the Officers of the NPS has been increased by the recently drafted Consolidated Para-Military Salary Structure (CONPASS).

In this regard, workers receive a monthly pay of ₦50 000 (cumulative sum of ₦800 000-₦1 000 000 per year).

As should be expected, the higher-ranking officers receive a higher sum. Specifically, the Controller General of the NPS earns the highest amount, while the Assistant Generals and Deputy Controller Generals receive a progressively lesser amount.

The most lauded part of the new salary scheme is that there is room for salary increment for lower-ranking officers. Officers in grade level 07 were transited to 08.

Category A

Superintendent Cadre:

Position _ Superintendent of Prisons (SP), Medical CONMESS 02. Applicants with M.D, M.B.B.S, M.D.S, or acceptable certificates from the appropriate universities are eligible to apply for this post. They get paid through the CONMESS 02 salary scheme.

Position _ Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP), Pharmacy CONHESS 09. Applicants with Bachelor’s Degrees in Pharmacy from the appropriate universities are eligible to apply.

Position _ Superintendent of Prisons (SP), Veterinary CONMESS 02. Applicants with D.V.M from the appropriate universities are eligible to apply for this post.

Position _ Assistant Superintendent of Prisons II (ASP.II), CONPASS 08. Eligible applicants must have obtained their first university degrees in the relevant fields such as Food Sciences, Public Health, Social Sciences, Humanities, Social Works, Psychology, Estate/Town Planning, and so on.

Position _ Assistant Superintendent of Prisons. I (ASP.I), CONPASS 09. Eligible applicants must possess Masters’ Degrees in the relevant fields such as Laboratory Sciences, Radiology, Humanities, Engineering, Social Sciences, Architecture, and so on.

Position _ Senior Inspector of Prisons (SIP), CONPASS 08. Eligible applicants must possess HND in the relevant fields such as Food Sciences, Estate/Town Planning, Psychology, Social Sciences, Social Works, Humanities, Public Health, and so on.

Note that to secure a position with the Nigerian Prison Service, these degrees must be obtained from the appropriate universities.

Position _ Assistant Inspector of Prisons (AIP)/ General Duty, CONPASS 06. The requirements are OND/NCE degrees.

Position _ Inspector of Prisons (IP) Nursing, CONHESS 06. Eligible applicants for this position are Registered Nurses/Midwives (RNM), Registered Nurses (RN), and Registered Midwives (RM)

Category B

Inspectorate Cadre:

Position _ Senior Inspector of Prisons (SIP), CONPASS 08. Eligible applicants must possess HNDs in the relevant fields such as Social Works, Humanities, Estate/Town Planning, Food Sciences, Social Sciences, Public Health, Psychology, and so on.

Position _ Assistant Inspector of Prisons (AIP)/ General Duty, CONPASS 06. The requirements are simple. Just an OND/NCE from the appropriate university

Position _ Inspector of Prisons (IP) Nursing, CONHESS 06. Interested applicants must be Registered Nurses/Midwives (RNM), Registered Nurses (RN), and Registered Midwives (RM) from the appropriate universities.

Category C

Assistant Cadre:

Position _ Prisons Assistant I (PAI) CONPASS 05. This is one of the low-tier positions with the NPS. The eligible applicants are required to possess SSCE/NECO, or Ordinary Level GCE results with at least 5 credit passes obtained in less than two sittings. The credit passes must include English Language and Mathematics.

Note: A Trade Test Grade 1 is acceptable.

Position _ Prison Assistant III (PA.III) CONPASS 03. The eligible applicant must possess SSCE/NECO, or Ordinary Level GCE with at least 3 credit passes in obtained in less than two sittings. This must include at least credit passes in English Language and Mathematics.

Note: Trade Test Grade III is acceptable for artisans. These are Masons, Electricians, Mechanics, Carpenters, and many others in this category.

Position _ Prisons Assistant II (PAII) CONPASS 04. Applicants will be required to provide their SSCE or Ordinary Level GCE results with at least 5 credit passes obtained in less than two sittings. This must include at least credit passes in English Language or an equivalent Test Grade II for applicants who are Masons, Mechanics, Auto Electricians, Artisans, Carpenters, and many others.
